Pidjanga

(Glossogobius giuris) is a freshwater fish native to Mainit Lake. It is called “biya” in Tagalog and “white goby or tank goby” in English. The term “pidjanga” is also sometimes fondly used to refer to the Mainitnons, the people of the Municipality of Mainit, a town in Southern Philippines. This blog hopes to capture potentials of Migrants Pidjangas for the Development of our Town by attempting to document development issues, folk stories, and current concerns, about the Pidjanga — both the fish and the people.

A Singing Pidjanga Priest - Fr. Ricky, MSC

I told you, we have great Pidjanga singers and composers. Naghuyat ra an iban kurukon!

Here's some of the many that Fr. Ricky Bermudez, MSC, a Pidjanga, composed and personally arranged and rendered via YouTube.

People the World Needs

Aurora , City of Lights

Hear or watch more of his compositions here.

I remember Fr. Ricky as one of the altar boys in Mainit and the man on the keyboards leading the choir during Sunday masses officiated by Fr. Peter Rosenhart, MSC (circa late 1980s) . I believe Jomarie is also a product of the Mainit Parish choir.

The Horrors of JANITOR FISH

Marikina River, the Agusan Marsh (where Lake Mainit shares a watershed), and other freshwater bodies in the country has been devastated by this once friendly but now ferocious JANITOR FISH.

LET US BE VIGILANT!!! PROTECT LAKE MAINIT from this pest!

Have your say!

Thanks Monyx and Jo for this advocacy. Let's work hand in hand.

Northern Mindanao produces first class dried fish

FROM SURIGAO LAKE TO MANILA SUPERMARKETS
(Published on page B3 of the April 2, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer)

MAINIT, Surigao del Norte— Local folks call it pijanga. Elsewhere, it is known as white goby. However it is called, this freshwater fish will go on record for having made it from Lake Mainit in Surigao del Norte to a processing plant in an agrarian reform community in the province, to big supermarkets in Metro Manila and Central Luzon.

Dried pijanga, produced by the Mainit ARC II, has begun to be sold in 100-gram, 250-gram, and 1 kg-packs in retail outlets in the metropolis. Considered "first-class dried fish"—in the category of dried bisugo and danggit—dried pijanga commands a premium price in the market.
